Groups

Fundamental to the practice of the Person-Centered Approach is a form of Group Therapy referred to as “Encounter Groups.” One of the basic concepts of Encounter Groups is that members share the responsibilities and privileges of leadership within the group. Although Encounter Groups may have facilitators, each group member is seen as equal to all other group members, and no person should have more power than any other should in the group.

General Encounter Group (monthly) This fee based group meets on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 2pm to 5pm in the West Village, Manhattan. The meetings are designed to allow members to fully express themselves in a safe, understanding, and empathetic environment and to develop a close and trusting relationship with the group. When conflicts arise, they are worked out constructively with empathic understanding and positive regard. Currently this group has 15 or more members and new members are encouraged to join.

Person-Centered Study Group (monthly) This free professional group meets monthly for an hour and a half. Prior to each meeting, group members choose Person-Centered or other study materials that will be discussed the following month. Within this group we attempt to create a safe and intimate environment where mental health practitioners can come together to discuss clinical material, and better understand the application of Person-Centered theory in practice. All members of the group have equal authority and are equally considered when making group decisions. Group members should be licensed or license-eligible mental health practitioners who currently see clients in clinical settings.

Psychiatric Medication Support Group (monthly) This fee based group meets monthly for an hour. This group is inspired by Dr. Peter Breggin and is designed for people who are: thinking about starting psychiatric medication, or thinking about getting off their medications, or are on psychiatric medication, or are completely off psychiatric medication, as well as others who are seeking support and education with their psychiatric medication.
