Groups
Fundamental to the practice of the Person-Centered Approach is a form of Group Therapy referred to as “Encounter Groups.” One of the basic concepts of Encounter Groups is that members share the responsibilities and privileges of leadership within the group. Although Encounter Groups may have facilitators, each group member is seen as equal to all other group members, and no person should have more power than any other should in the group.

Group Therapy Focused on Relationships (bi-weekly) This fee-based, experiential group meets every other week at our offices in Manhattan. Co-Facilitated by Sarton Weinraub, Ph.D., and Elvira Medus, MSW, this Person-Centered psychotherapeutic group is focused on helping its members better understand and participate in relationships of all kinds. If you are in a romantic, family, or friend relationship, this group can help you. This group is open to adults of all ages and backgrounds. Single people and married people are both welcome. Come alone or with another person. We meet on Tuesdays at 8:00pm or Saturdays at 1:00pm for an hour and a half. The fee is $70 and we accept most major health insurance plans. Sign up now as space is limited.
General Encounter Group (monthly) This free experiential group meets once a month at different locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn for three hours. The meetings are designed to allow members to fully express themselves in a safe, understanding, and empathetic environment and to develop a close and trusting relationship with the group. When conflicts arise, they are worked out constructively with empathic understanding and positive regard. Currently this group has 10 members and new members are encouraged to join.
Person-Centered Study Group (monthly) This free group meets monthly for an hour and a half. Prior to each meeting, group members choose Person-Centered or other study materials that will be discussed the following month. Within this group we attempt to create a safe and intimate environment where mental health practitioners can come together to discuss clinical material, and better understand the application of Person-Centered theory in practice. All members of the group have equal authority and are equally considered when making group decisions. Group members should be licensed or license-eligible mental health practitioners who currently see clients in clinical settings.
Site Specific Person-Centered Groups We offer a wide range of fee-based and site-specific groups and encounter groups for large and small groups such as businesses, organizations, and families. These groups can be one-time or ongoing, and are designed to meet the specific needs of the group requesting the service. Because of our organizational structure, we are able to meet the needs of many different kinds of groups who are looking for new, progressive, and sustaining ways to accomplish conflict resolution.
